CARLISLE SALON CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY

LEADING salon in Carlisle - Lockstock Hairdressing - has just celebrated its tenth birthday.
Established with just a £10,000 bank loan and a hand-written appointments book in 2005, today it is a stylish, innovative hairdressing business which has marked its ten-year milestone with a complete salon makeover.
A range of different textures and tones were infused to create a natural warm feel forLockstock’s new look. Preparation began last summer with a mood board to aid visualising a variety of woods, materials and swatches of browns, creams and golds colour.
Switching to Salon Promotions for all its supplies in 2010 also helped proprietor Lynda Kyle drive the business forward.
“Moving from a recognised international supplier to a smaller UK-based company with new product lines was a gamble,” said Lynda.
“But I wanted a more supportive relationship with a supplier, informed product knowledge and additional trainingfor the staff. Salon Promotions delivers everything I required.”
Salon Promotions supply LockstockHairdressing with a range of pioneering brands including Cloud 9, Alterna; Bamlinkboo, Caviar and Ten ranges, Silky, Kerastraight Treatment, and Salon Promotions’ own hair care brand Neal and Wolf.
As Salon Promotions’ Carlisle flagship salon, Lockstock received training to hosteducational sessions on these ranges for other hairdressing business in Cumbria.
Indeed, to commemorate Lockstock’s tenth anniversary the supplier’s Alterna Tenrange is being woven into the salon’s nextbillboard advertisement.
“Our billboard is seen by thousands of commuters driving out of the city every day,” explained Lynda.
“Along with sharp marketing and PR, it has helped us establish our brand, get the media talking about us and attract a lot of new clients.”
Since moving to its current Riverside House premises on the outskirts of Carlisle, Lockstock has concentrated on in-house training with apprentices linked to a local college.
“It is so rewarding to guide and develop passionate, enthusiastic young adults into a new career of a professional stylist and thenintegrate them into the team,” said Lynda.
Today, the business employs 10 people including five stylists, utilises a state-of-the-art computer software appointment system with online booking, a loyalty card scheme and regular promotions and offers with social media updates.
“We’ve come a long way from the originalsmall unit in another part of the city but at the end of the day great customer care is our constant objective,” said Lynda.
To boost her own managerial skills, Lynda - who is married with a young son - completed a three-year FDA Business Management degree.
“It taught me a huge amount about people management, team working, leading by example and the importance of communication and networking,” she explained.
However, when it came to understanding the role of so-called corporate social responsibility in modern-day business, Lynda was already streets ahead.
Her pioneering calendar and billboard campaign in association with Carlisle MENCAP three years ago unashamedly pushed hair models with learning disabilities to the front of Lockstock’s glossy and glamorous marketing.
“Hair salons and beauty parlours are for everyone not just for the so-called ‘beautiful’ people,” said Lynda at the time.
“People with learning disabilities deserve the same opportunities as everyone else to look as good as they possibly can and that includes having the best haircuts and hairstyles. It really is that simple.”
After a decade at the helm, Lynda, 39, continues to innovate.
She recently brought in celebrity hairdresser Des Murray from London to teach her stylists textured hairstyle cutting techniques, and staff are regularly sent on training courses to stay abreast of new trends in the industry.
Further expansion is on the horizon.
“I’m already looking at the possibility of opening a second Lockstock Hairdressing salon, introducing a specific training area and holding more seminars and courses for other salons,” said Lynda.
“It’s very fulfilling celebrating ten years in business and I’m sure we’ll open a bottle or two of champagne, but after that it’s very much back to work and planning for the future.”
